It'll have been 2 years since the devastating Haiti earthquake that so changed the landscape of that country. So much of the destruction has yet to be repaired and rebuilding is slow.
The following quote from Haiti, One Year Later gives a glimpse into where we were a year ago...
On January 12, 2010 Haiti was forever changed
A massive earthquake shook the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, affecting 3 million people. 230,000 lives were lost. It was one of the worst natural disasters this generation has seen. But out of the dust and rubble, hope is rising. Hearts are healing. Lives are being rebuilt. We will not give up on Haiti. People are still suffering and cholera is spreading throughout the country. A million people remain homeless, but we’re here for the long haul. Are you? Will you help? Together, we can change lives. Help heal Haiti.(http://www.haitioneyear.org/)
With nearly a half a million people still in camps, the need for assistance in Haiti is just as great as it was in the immediate aftermath of the event.
Imagine This! has an opportunity to make a difference, even in the face of great adversity, because it only takes a bit of determination coupled with organization to move mountains.
To see what the IT! community is involved in for Haiti, just browse the community projects. For a refresher on Eion's 2010 trip to Port au Prince, watch the Haiti webisodes.
Here's hoping that 2012 sees a better future for the people of Haiti.
Cheers!
