CSRminute: Wal-Mart is Target of International Protest Over Bangladeshi Suppliers; World Economic Forum Meets in China to Set Agenda for Davos

Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Tuesday, September 14th:
Wal-Mart stores in 40 cities across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. were the focus of an International Day of Action last week. In a global event organized by labor rights organizations, Wal-Mart was asked to support labor leaders jailed last month in Bangladesh for demanding an increase in the national minimum wage—currently 12 cents an hour—for garment workers. Letters addressed to local Wal-Mart store managers encouraged Wal-Mart to take action against Nassa Group and Envoy Group, two leading Bangladeshi garment conglomerates, which both source to Wal-Mart.
The World Economic Forum is hosting a meeting this week in China to discuss the agenda for the fourth Davos Forum to be held next summer. More than 1,400 attendees from business, government, and academia are discussing how to achieve sustainable growth amid global economic recovery. Topics covered include the re-shaping of the competitive landscape in a resource-limited business universe, and China’s responsibility to the world. The annual meeting is one of the most important business gatherings in Asia, attracting business leaders from throughout the world, including those from emerging economies and industries.
