Ben Storan is Irish born, and a son of a monk. He received his Masters and is currently working towards his Ph.D. at the Royal College of Art, London. His Ph.D. project (vertical-axis wind turbine) has already won the prestigious ‘British Standards Institute Sustainability’ award for 2007. His second Sustainability prize was for his ‘favela’ based Rio de Janeiro project in which the entire community is taught to turn their two cash crops (local flowers and sugar) into a third product — perfume sold in organic sugar crystal bottles. Ben has also had extensive experience in the construction and design of gas pipelines, knee surgery tools for Johnson & Johnson, theatre sets and costuming. Wired magazine was so impressed by Ben and partner Adrian Westaway’s inventions — they decided the two inventors must be a part of their ‘Next-Fest’ convention in Los Angeles 2007. Ben and Adrian debuted their newest joint creation (human biometric feedback display) at the L.A. Convention center in front of 40,000 visitors to much fanfare. |
