Saving the lives of destitute children in India

Saving the lives of destitute children in India

An amazing home for destitute children in India is under threat from unscrupulous developers. Across the river lie the ruins of the historic ashram where the Beatles learned to meditate. Could it be transformed into a new home for India's poor?

Latest news via email from Prabhavati Dwabha, founder of Ramana's garden.

Ramana's Garden is now a loving home to 67 kids, newest arrivals Vishal 18months and Rekha 5 yrs.

Our location situation worsens by the day. The huge condos are up to 8 stories going up 1 more all 300 and worst is that they have huge pipes to run all their sewage untreated direct into the River Ganga which will make it impossible for our kids to bathe, or wash their clothes there any longer and rules out any possibility of pumping up water for our urgent water shortage. Without pumping up from Ganga we can't continue to grow our own food in Ramana's Garden. There is intact pumping and storage system down at the Beatles Ashram.

We have to Move!!!! We can't continue to provide clean drinking water to our kids, our animals, our visitors, or our vegetables.

Our Womens' Weaving project "We Love Bunnies" has grown a lot, providing a safe loving home to 200 angora rabbits and employment to over 36 women. We have no more space for looming but the whole project could move to Beatles.

(15 acres) is lying abandoned and in waste for over 18 years that could with minor renovations provide a loving, safe, supportive environment for shelter, education, vocational training and rehabilitation to over 2500 children (the number of abandoned children living in the streets of Delhi alone is over 50000) while at least 23 million still slave in child labor and the Govt states they can't afford to relocate or give them vocational training) and provide vocational training and jobs for 500 destitute women..(In Uttrakhand there is not a single shelter for destititute women and none of the jails in our district even have a seperate holding cell for women)

It is a fact that the Govt. is planning to "round up all the beggers" in Delhi and move them to restraining camps out in desert outside Delhi for the 2010 games---good time to be doing this coverage as there will be 1000s of children in those camps.

The former Beatles ashram has over 500 accommodation rooms all with attached bathrooms that are recoverable, 3 large halls, Kitchens, classrooms, and plenty of open area for sports fields, organic vegetable gardens, etc. It was given on lease from the Forest Dept. The lease has since been cancelled and the status now is that it cannot be given again on lease without permission from the Central Government. Chief Wildlife Warden Shrikant Chandola has taken the protection of this valuable forest asset strongly to heart and has kept a vigilant eye that this historic treasure not fall into hands that would lead to it’s destruction. The are few sites in all of India that can guarentee such a safe, sheltered environment here on Mother Ganga’s banks.

The children that can benifit from our assistance programs herenot any different than the children throughout India today that face dire circumstances of starvation, abuse, sexual exploitation and bonded labour. They need help to turn misfortunes into stepping stones for a successful future.

The children are our future. Please join hands with us to show the world that “we do care about our children”, and are taking steps without delay to change their plight today.

Ramana's Garden is a very special place and Dwabha/Prabhavati is an extraordinary woman with the energy and vision to turn the abandoned Maharishi's ashram into a haven for even more destitute children. I have visited Ramana's Garden several times and was always incredibly touched by the loving energy of the place, and by the way the children relate both to her and to each other.

She is an amazing woman and the school is incredible. I have visited childrens projects all over the world and hers is probaly the best I have seen. The love she provides and the spirit of pride she makes the children have in themselves is incredible. The beatles ashram would be amazing, these guts really deserve it.

Ramana's Garden is really fantastic! The children can teach us so much: in spite of all they have suffered, they are so merry and confident and light-hearted.

I Have known Dwabha for quite a number of years now and had already seen her doing some very Kool work with tribal villagers in the surrounding area of Rishikesh in the 90's...I totally appreciate her devotion and passion for adding her share to improve the lives of these wonderful kids who needs a new home and what better place than the Former Ahshram of the Beatles.

"it is urgent to move"I do know about the heat as more than half my life was spent in India...Yes...If we pull this through(by divine intervention as well) I can easily imagine that we can say yes...there is still more space... you are Welcome.

I do realize that although Ramana's Garden is self sufficient in certain ways....It still requires visitors for its survival..Not a very healthy dependency..Political and world economic changes are going through a transmutation at the moment in time...less money ..less tourists
And yes !!Here is not only your Dream Mayke.... but my Dream too......
The magic of the Beatles, which was Love, Love, Love...would continue to flourish in this most practical way of providing a place to grow and expand this haven for the children as well as provide a historic place for the caring annual visitors and volunteers, and hopefully attract many more.

Several years ago a friend of mine, Kathy Carroll, told me about her involvement with Ramana's Garden, and asked if I would like to collaborate on a musical about some of the children who live there. I learned more about the founder, Prabhavati, and all the wonderful things she is doing for destitute, abandoned, and abused children. About how all of the children are getting a first class education, learning to speak English, cooking, dancing, and giving back to their community. About how they are training women in the village to have careers, growing organic food on their property, and teaching community neighbors how to grow organic food. It is a totally win win combination between the orphanage and their neighbors. I would love to see them expand their living quarters to this new property. Kathy and I received permission to write our musical, and we are currently working on it. Empowering children with the tools to lead a fulfilling and happy life is a grand plan.

Ramana's Garden is run with heart based intention and thoroughly humane mechanics. I'd be hard pressed to say who gains more from this organization: the children, or all those they inspire.
